Plaster Types UK Guide

UK plastering uses gypsum-based products manufactured to British Standard BS EN 13279. British Gypsum's Thistle range dominates the market, with specific products for undercoats (bonding, browning) and finishing coats (multi-finish, board finish).

British Gypsum Thistle Range

The Thistle range provides complete plastering solutions for all backgrounds. Each product is formulated for specific substrates and application stages. Using the correct plaster type ensures proper adhesion, drying and surface finish.

Thistle Bonding Coat

Purpose: Undercoat plaster for low-suction backgrounds such as concrete blocks, engineering bricks, plasterboard or painted surfaces.

Application: Applied 8-12mm thick to provide a level base for finishing coat. Contains lightweight aggregates for good adhesion to smooth surfaces. Scratched with a devil float when firm to provide key for topcoat.

Coverage: One 25kg bag covers 2.4m² at 12mm thickness.

Drying time: 1-2 hours before applying finishing coat. 7-14 days full cure.

Thistle Browning

Purpose: Undercoat plaster for high-suction backgrounds like brickwork, medium-density blockwork or absorbent surfaces.

Application: Applied 8-12mm thick. Browning contains less bonding agent than Bonding Coat, relying on mechanical key with porous substrates. Often used with PVA sealer on very absorbent backgrounds.

Coverage: One 25kg bag covers 2.3m² at 12mm thickness.

Drying time: 1-2 hours before finishing coat. 7-14 days full cure.

Thistle Multi-Finish

Purpose: All-purpose finishing plaster for most backgrounds including plasterboard, bonding coat, browning coat and old plaster.

Application: Applied 2-3mm thick as final coat. Most popular finishing plaster in UK due to versatility. Provides smooth white surface for decoration. Can be applied directly to plasterboard (skim coat) or over undercoat plasters.

Coverage: One 25kg bag covers 10m² at 2mm thickness.

Drying time: 2-5 days before painting. Mist coat (diluted emulsion) required before full-strength paint.

Thistle Board Finish

Purpose: Finishing plaster specifically formulated for plasterboard. Slightly faster setting than Multi-Finish.

Application: Applied 2-3mm thick to plasterboard joints, screw heads and entire surface. Provides smooth finish for decoration. Most plasterers now use Multi-Finish instead due to its wider application range.

Coverage: One 25kg bag covers 10m² at 2mm thickness.

Drying time: 2-5 days before painting.

Thistle One Coat

Purpose: Single-coat plaster for repair work, patching and small areas. Not suitable for full room plastering.

Application: Applied 5-50mm thick in one application. Useful for filling holes, chases and damaged areas. Sets harder than standard plasters, making it less suitable for trowelling large areas.

Coverage: One 25kg bag covers 1.5m² at 10mm thickness.

Drying time: 1-2 hours set time. 5-7 days before decoration.

Complementary Products

Thistlebond (Plasterboard Adhesive)

Gypsum-based adhesive for bonding plasterboard to solid backgrounds (dot and dab method). Applied in vertical strips (dabs) to brick or blockwork, plasterboard pressed onto dabs. Coverage: one 25kg bag bonds 4-5 plasterboard sheets. Alternative to timber battens or metal frame systems.

Thistle Dri-Coat

Replastering system for damp walls after damp-proof course installation. Salt-inhibiting formulation prevents efflorescence (white salt staining). Applied 11mm thick as undercoat, finished with Multi-Finish. Used in basements, cellars and walls with historic damp issues.

PVA Sealer

Not a British Gypsum product but essential for plastering preparation. PVA (polyvinyl acetate) sealer controls suction on high-absorbency backgrounds. Diluted 1:4 with water, applied 24 hours before plastering. Prevents plaster drying too quickly, which causes cracking and poor adhesion.

Knauf Alternatives

Knauf is the main competitor to British Gypsum. Their product range mirrors Thistle with different names: Knauf Goldband (browning equivalent), Knauf Bonding Coat, Knauf Multi-Finish. Performance is comparable. Some plasterers prefer Knauf for setting time or workability, but British Gypsum Thistle remains UK market leader with wider stockist availability.
